Its getting to the point that we don't know who we have told what. So just in case, here is the (current) plan: Red and I are quitting our jobs at the end of May and by July we hope to be in Europe - primarily Italy and France. We are going to be touring both countries and taking cooking classes, visiting wineries and negociants (wine merchants), seeing local markets and/or specialty food production places. Obviously we can't complain that we will be traveling (I've never really been to Europe!), but we also hope to learn quite a bit so that we can come back to the US and try new careers.
Yes, we appear to be fools (leaving perfectly good jobs in the midst of an economic crisis), but we are following our passions (I've said that so many times I want to gag). Sounds sappy, but its true. We love food and wine, and want to see if we can turn that into a job. When we come back, we will be getting jobs in the field and then eventually opening our own...something. A shop, a restaurant, a wine bar, or a topless tapas bar? All of the above but maybe minus the topless part.
Anyway, we are well aware that we sound nuts, so please don't feel the need to point that out (someone else has probably already done that today). We couldn't be happier and can't wait to share stories, nightmares, pictures, recipes, rants, etc.
More than likely if you are reading this you are a family member or close friend, so perhaps this first post should end with: thanks for your support - we will need it in the months/years to come.
At one level this is a truism: By definition, people must be selling when prices fall.
